>We are building a small community of *attention* and mutual recognition here
Simone Weil, “attention consists of suspending thought, leaving it detached, empty, and ready to be penetrated by the object. It means holding in our minds, within reach of this thought, but on a lower level and not in contact with it, the diverse knowledge we have acquired.”
I regret not getting to know you better when we were family. I regret how I broke away from the family. I'm glad I have the opportunity to get to know you now through I have serious news. Your messages are so sincere and honest and I thank you for teaching me a thing or two on life and reminding me how I should look at life. As always, I'm keeping you in my prayers.
Wow!! This is a profound and a truly beautiful reflection. I find myself recalling your words often as I deal with my own health issues. Thanks for the inspiration.
Laurie, thank you. If you feel up to it and are willing to share, I would like to know more about your health (william dot p dot gardner at gmail dot com).
I don't think I've commented yet, but I have consistently found much to value in your writing. I'm sorry we didn't get to work together for more than a brief moment, but you have enriched my life despite the brief contact. Thank you.
Chaim, thanks so much. I regret that our Covid project didn't work out. In retrospect, it was the first casualty of my illness. I hope that you and yours made it safely through the pandemic.
We raised our children in the Pittsburgh neighbourhood of Tree of Life; several close friends belonged to that congregation. Very fortunately, all our friends survived the massacre. Now I amj heartbroken by events in Israel. I hope that everyone you know there is safe.
Thank you as always, Bill. In the therapy teaching that I do, I have made many different efforts to articulate what I mean by "attunement". Usually I talk about it in terms of "right brain to right brain" communication, but that is only a partial capture. I appreciate your description of the meeting of our inner worlds and the pulling towards that is the foundation of meaningful connection where growth and change become safer. I have great gratitude for the role that you and Kathi have played in my life.

As always you are truly an inspiration
Trenchant and inspiring as always, Bill.
Barry: Thank you so much for the kind words and for the recommendation on your great substack.
My pleasure, Bill, and back at you, a fellow Canadian to boot!
In truth, I am an American expat. I have had an application for citizenship filed for several years! Apparently Covid paralyzed the government.
I think posting Tom Thomson paintings earns you honorary citizenship.
That comment truly makes me smile!
